This worked example separates repeated walls, ceiling, waste, whole-sheet division and price. It does not subtract a door or window and does not claim a cutting layout.

1. Total the surfaces

Enter two 12 × 8 ft walls: 12 × 8 × 2 = 192 ft². Enter two 10 × 8 ft walls: 10 × 8 × 2 = 160 ft². Add the 12 × 10 ft ceiling: 120 ft². Gross area is 192 + 160 + 120 = 472 ft². Each line remains visible, so the room dimensions and the decision to include the ceiling can be checked independently.

2. Apply the explicit 10%

The user chooses 10 as a whole waste percentage. Purchase area is 472 × (100 + 10) ÷ 100 = 519.2 ft². Gross area remains visible as 472 ft², so the additional 47.2 ft² is not confused with measured room area. Openings remain included. Choosing another percentage would change only this stage and every earlier measurement would stay the same.

3. Divide by exact sheet area

The 4 × 8 ft preset has 32 ft² per sheet. Divide 519.2 by 32 to obtain 16.225. The material estimate therefore rounds upward to 17 whole sheets. Nothing else rounds upward: gross area and purchase area keep their exact rational values internally. This does not mean 17 sheets form an optimized layout; it is the conservative result of the documented area formula.

4. Multiply optional price

If the exact selected sheet costs $14.25, optional material cost is 17 × $14.25 = $242.25. Price multiplies the whole purchase count, not 16.225 fractional sheets. The estimate excludes tax, delivery, labour, screws, tape, compound and stock. Change the price when the chosen product or sheet dimensions change; DrywallCalc never fetches or claims a live price.
