Subtracting the square metres of a window looks precise, but precision in one formula is not the same as a feasible sheet layout. An opening changes cuts and joints rather than simply removing a purchasable rectangle.
A cutout is not automatically a saved sheet
A door or window removes finished wall area, yet the surrounding wall often begins as one or more full sheets that must be cut. The removed piece may be too small, have the wrong orientation or be needed only after another incompatible cut. Without the dimensions and placement of every opening plus a packing algorithm, subtracting opening area can make the purchase count look lower than the available cuts support. Keep waste separate and user-controlled
Not subtracting openings is not a hidden waste percentage. Gross area is one visible stage; your whole waste percentage is another. Purchase area equals gross area multiplied by one plus that chosen percentage. The tool starts with a reviewed example value in the form, but the user can set zero or another integer. It does not claim a universal recommendation because room shape, installer method and product handling differ.
Know when the estimate is not enough
A rectangular area estimate is useful for a quick material check, quote comparison or early shopping list. It is insufficient when the project depends on seam placement, staggered joints, unusual angles, curved work, partial-height finishes or a strict cutting schedule. Keep the transparent result, then compare it with a project-specific takeoff or installer plan rather than treating a simple calculator as layout optimization.
